The M87 Jet - J.A. Biretta

چکیده

We review the current observational status of the M87 jet at radio, optical, and X-ray frequencies. Special attention is paid to the radio morphology, the radio-to-X-ray spectrum, measurement of proper motions, and optical evidence for a counter-jet. The problem of jet confinement is discussed, as well as models for the radio-to-X-ray spectrum and the related problem of particle lifetimes. Finally a kinematic model is sketched wherein the first kpc of the jet is relativistic, followed by shocks and subrelativistic flow.

Month-timescale Optical Variability in the M87 Jet

A previously inconspicuous knot in the M87 jet has undergone a dramatic outburst and now exceeds the nucleus in optical and X-ray luminosity. Monitoring of M87 with the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory during 2002-2003, has found month-timescale optical variability in both the nucleus and HST-1, a knot in the jet 0.82 from the nucleus. We discuss the behavior of the variabil...

Analysis of the Synchrotron Emission from the M87 Jet

We propose that the intensity changes and spectral evolution along the M87 jet can be explained by adiabatic changes to the particle momentum distribution function and the magnetic field. This is supported by the lack of any significant variation in the radio–to–optical spectral index along the jet and the moderate changes in radio brightness. Assuming a simple scaling law between magnetic fiel...

X-ray Emission Diagnostics from the M87 Jet

The M87 jet is the nearest (16 Mpc, giving a scale of 1 = 78 pc) and highest surfacebrightness jet in the optical, radio and X-rays. As such it makes an excellent prototype for studying jet physics. The jet shows only modest differences in morphology between the optical and radio: in the optical the jet appears knottier and is more concentrated along the centerline (Sparks, Biretta & Macchetto ...

Face-on dust disks in galaxies with optical jets

The presence of optical synchrotron jets in radio galaxies is relatively rare. Here, we show that of the nearest five FR-I 3CR radio galaxies showing optical jets, four show evidence for almost circular, presumably face-on, dust disks. This is strong support for the two-fold idea that (i) jets emerge close to perpendicular to inner gas disks and (ii) optical non-thermal synchrotron emission is ...

Progress Toward a VLBA Movie of the Jet Collimation Region in M

With its high black hole mass, proximity, and bright jet, M87 provides the best prospect for a direct imaging study of the acceleration and collimation region of a jet. Previous VLBI observations have shown an edge brightened structure with a wide opening angle at small scales (Junor, Biretta, & Livio 1999). An effort to measure component speeds in this region using existing VLBA data at 43 GHz...
